I think it is safe to say that 2011 was the year of QR Codes! Everywhere you look these days you see QR Codes whether they are on packaging, clothing, posters, etc.

Now that we are at the end of 2011 and ready to ring in 2012 we wanted to recap on the Top 10 QR Codes/QR Code uses that we found this year.

Stubb’s BBQ Uses QR Codes To Integrate Print & Social Media

I can’t lie. I love Stubb’s BBQ sauce.

I pretty much put it on everything.

And after seeing that they have incorporated QR Codes onto their product labels, I could not help but blog about it.

Top 5 Things to do with QR Codes This Holiday Season

The holidays are here and this past year QR Codes have been just about everywhere you look, so I only thought it would be right to do a fun blog post about what you can do with QR Codes this holiday season. Whether you use these ideas in your marketing efforts or just for fun, we hope you enjoy QR Codes just as much as we do!

1. QR Code wrapping paper: Add a little fun to your holiday wrapping paper this year. If you happen to know a printer that is willing to run a few sheets of paper off for you this could be really fun. Create the QR Codes (using QReate & Track of course!) and have them link to some family photo’s or some fun little videos.

2. QR Code ornament: How about a QR Code on the tree? Create custom ornaments with QR Codes on them.

3. QR Code holiday cards: Whether your company sends out holiday cards to your customers or you send them out from your family, this year try adding a QR Code somewhere on the card! Have the QR Code link to a special holiday message from the president of your company or a holiday greetings from your own family…get creative!

4. QR Code gift tags: Once you have your QR Code wrapping paper you need to top it off with a QR Code gift tag! Adding a QR Code to a gift tag allows you to add a personal message or a video that you can share with others. Just a few helpful hints when creating a gift tag with a QR Code on it: Be sure that the QR Code is at least 3/4 of an inch, any smaller and some phones might have a hard time scanning it. Be sure to also make the QR Code a dark enough color (dark green, navy blue, deep red etc.) along with some white space around it to be sure that the QR Code can be scanned with most phones.

5. Holiday sale signage: The malls are packed and the lines are getting long, QR Codes can become very helpful in these cases. Having a sale poster or any kind of signage in your store can be a convenience to your customers. By having a QR Code it might allow your shoppers to scan it and be directed to your online store where they can shop later on or they might be directed to your store hours or maybe even a special coupon for your store.

QR Codes for a Cure: Ben’s Dream

Last night I received an email from a co-worker who had found a QR Code that was being used for a very powerful reason. The QR Code is being used in part of “Ben’s Dream“. Ben is a young boy that suffers from Sanfilippo Syndrome.

Ben, along with his friends and family, are working to promote awareness and raise funds to support research aimed at finding a cure for Sanfilippo Syndrome. Ben’s Dream is up for a Chase Community Giving grant on Facebook.

The more Facebook votes that Ben gets, the higher the grant that Ben will receive.

Porsche Car Dealership using QR Codes

Usually the mall is not a place where you go in search for a new car or even to look at cars, but apparently I was wrong the other day. A mall that I visited the other day was showcasing a few cars on display right in the middle of the shopping mall. Now these were not used cars or even everyday cars, these were $115,525.00 cars (so I looked from a distance!). While looking I did notice something that caught my attention and that was that a few of the cars had a QR Code on the windows.

LifeProof iPhone Covers using QR Codes

Thanks John Foley, Jr. for sharing this QR Code usage with us! John found this QR Code on the packaging for his new phone cover. There were 2 QR Codes, 1 on the top of the box and then 1 inside on the directions sheet. The QR Codes directed people to a website where you could learn more about the company’s products and also shop for other items right from your smartphone.

Breast Cancer Awareness using QR Codes

We recently found this business card promoting Breast Cancer Awareness that included a QR Code. The website is RUMANENOUGH.com ( R U Man Enough). The QR Codes on their business cards link right to their Facebook page where they post pictures and videos for the cause.

Local Dentist using QR Codes on Direct Mailer

Thanks to John Foley, Jr. for spotting this QR Code on a direct mail piece from a local dentist. The QR Code directed people to the Contact/Directions page of their website.

We love the idea of a local business using QR Codes to connect people to pages that make it easy for customers and prospects to contact them or find their location. But, we do have one idea on how this QR Code implementation could be improved:

The QR Code currently contains a very long URL (it points to their business link on Google). The URL should be shortened first.
This would allow for the business to perhaps decrease the size of the QR Code a bit. It also could increase that older phones (whose cameras might not be as great as say the one in the iPhone 4) could still scan the QR Code successfully.
On the direct mail piece, there could have been a brief line of text that encourages people to scan the QR Code. For example, something like “Scan this QR Code to contact us today!” or “Need directions? Simply scan this QR Code with your smartphone,” may have helped.

Car Mechanics and QR Codes

When you have to bring your car to the shop to be fixed it is usually never a pleasant feeling for your wallet. But what if you had a coupon to use to save a little money on the bill. Well Jiffy Lube is offering just that. A recent mailer that our very own Jason Pinto recieved in the mail from Jiffy Lube had a QR Code on it that links to a mobile website that has some coupons, service information and locations. All of these items are important to have on a mobile site so that customers can use in the case of an emergency and also if there is a mobile coupon that they can present at the counter when paying.

Pig n’ Pepper Festival using QR Codes

The other day I received a flyer on my windshield and like most people I usually read them quickly and toss. But to my surprise this flyer had a QR Code on it! Therefore I kept the flyer to share as a blog post.
